SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford second baseman Brooks Carlson and Wofford right-handed pitcher Elliot Carney have been named the Southern Conference player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for all games from May 3-9. The selections are made by the league office.
Carlson hit .500 (7-of-14) with three doubles, two home runs, six runs and 11 RBIs for a huge weekend in Samford’s three-game sweep at VMI. In the first game of the series, Carlson went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and a career-high seven RBIs. He had two hits in each of the last two games of the series, including a double and an RBI in game two. The junior from Mobile, Alabama, hit a home run and three RBIs in the series finale that improved Samford to a 17-7 conference record. He also posted a 1.143 slugging percentage for the week.
Samford’s 25 runs in Friday’s 25-1 win at VMI were the most Samford has ever scored in a regular-season SoCon game. The total eclipses the old mark of 20 scored against College of Charleston in 2010.
The Bulldogs (27-19, 17-7 SoCon) will host Auburn on Tuesday, May 11, at 7 p.m. ET before playing their last home conference series of the season against UNCG (24-21, 10-14) on Friday at 3 p.m. ET.
Carney earned his second pitcher of the week honor of the season after pitching a complete game 9-0 shutout over The Citadel on Sunday, which marked his second complete game shutout of the season. He is the first Terrier to have two complete nine-inning shutout wins in the same season since 2015. The senior from Sammamish, Washington, limited the Bulldogs to no hits in the first 8 2/3 innings and struck out 10 without a walk, marking his third game this season with 10 or more strikeouts. Carney only allowed two baserunners in the game and leads the conference with 87 strikeouts over 71 innings pitched.
Wofford (30-16, 17-7) will travel to Durham, North Carolina, to play Duke University on Tuesday, May 11. This weekend’s three-game series against Red Division rival Western Carolina (22-17, 10-9) begins on Friday, May 14, at 4 p.m.
