Notes
• ETSU visits Mercer on Saturday in a game with Southern Conference title implications and The Citadel hosts Furman in the Ingles SoCon Game of the Week on select Nexstar affiliates.

• ETSU, Mercer and idle VMI are vying for the SoCon title and the league’s automatic bid to the FCS playoffs. The loser of Saturday’s ETSU/Mercer tilt will be mathematically eliminated from winning either.

• The Bucs and the Bears both beat ranked squads last week. ETSU toppled previously unbeaten VMI, then ranked No. 10 in both major polls, 24-20, and Mercer earned its second straight win over a ranked opponent, taking down then-No. 17/21 Furman, 26-14, a week after beating No. 10/9 Chattanooga 35-28. ETSU will be Mercer’s third straight ranked opponent.

• With its win over VMI pushing its season record to 4-1, ETSU moved into the national polls for the first time since 2018 at No. 20 in the AFCA FCS Coaches’ Top 25 and at No. 21 in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25. The Keydets dropped to Nos. 13 and 14, respectively, while Furman and Mercer received votes in both polls.

• Quay Holmes rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns and added 158 yards on kick returns for 293 all-purpose yards in ETSU’s win over VMI, earning Stats Perform FCS National Offensive Player of the Week distinction as well as SoCon weekly honors. Defensive back Alijah Huzzie had a career-high 13 tackles and an interception in earning SoCon Defensive Player of the Week presented by GEICO honors.

• Mercer quarterback Carter Peevy was named the Stats Perform FCS National Freshman of the Week after throwing for a school-record 406 yards and accounting for three total touchdowns in the win over Furman. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Ty James caught eight passes for a school-record 179 yards and a score. Punter/kicker Caleb Dowden earned SoCon weekly special teams honors after scoring eight points on two field goals and a pair of PATs and punting three times.

• The Citadel picked up its first win of the season last week, getting an 8-yard scoring run from Clay Harris with 26 seconds left to complete the Bulldogs’ rally from 17 points down in a 27-24 win at Wofford. Harris ran for 113 yards and two scores on the day.

• Furman compiled just 243 yards of total offense in its loss to Mercer last week. The Paladins led 14-7 on Hamp Sisson’s 30-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Miller early in the third quarter, but the Bears outscored Furman 19-0 the rest of the way.

• Despite its loss to ETSU last week, VMI still controls its own destiny. A win over The Citadel on April 17 would clinch the Keydets’ first SoCon title since 1977.

• Samford quarterback Liam Welch and safety Chris Edmonds were named the SoCon Offensive and Defensive Players of the Month, respectively, for March.

• Wofford announced Monday that it had opted out of the remainder of the season. The Terriers’ final two games will be considered no-contests.

• Western Carolina saw its season come to a premature end, as its final two opponents were Chattanooga, which also opted out of the remainder of its season on March 29, and Wofford. ETSU and Furman also saw their final regular-season games canceled, as the Bucs had been scheduled to play Chattanooga and the Paladins had been slated to play Wofford on April 17.
