Mercer’s Delano named to the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Watch List

The senior is one of 17 collegiate baseball players honored

LUBBOCK, Texas – Mercer’s Garett Delano has been named to the 2021 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award Watch List, the College Baseball Foundation announced on Tuesday morning.

The senior infielder/right-hander Delano is hitting .319 with five home runs and 22 RBIs and is 3-0 with a 2.81 ERA and eight walks with 34 strikeouts on the mound.

The award is named for former Washington State University standout John Olerud, who achieved success both as a first baseman and left-handed pitcher during the late 1980s. He was inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007. The award will be presented by the College Baseball Foundation later this summer.

The deep pool of talent resulting from several veteran players returning for an extra season granted by the NCAA in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, plus the influx of new talent from the last two seasons, has created a unique pool of 17 top candidates for the 2021 Olerud watch list. The list also includes teammates from two Power 5 schools, three players who have already been honored with the Olerud Player of the Week award and four players who were on the watch list for the 2019 award.
