We knew going into a year with the COVID-19 pandemic that there would be cancellations, postponements and even the potential of opt outs that would create unbalanced schedules that would have teams playing different numbers of games and have some teams playing more difficult schedules. This was discussed with our schools all year long and it was understood that if we were going to play in these conditions that there could be scheduling inequities. That is why we worked diligently to create scheduling guidelines for all sports that are able to determine fair and reasonable regular season champions and tournament seeding, taking into account anticipated scheduling inequities, that was approved by our Southern Conference institutions.
Not surprisingly, we have had several instances this year in which unequal schedules were created by COVID-related issues combined with other challenges outside an institution’s control. It was agreed by all schools that there be a minimum number of players overall and at certain positions in order for teams to safely compete in each sport. It was also agreed that the conference office would investigate each claim for cancellation and seek verification from the athletic director and a medical professional in order for there to be approval of these cancelled games, which would be considered no contests. The conference has trusted in the integrity of each institution’s claims and in the spirit of understanding and flexibility during these unprecedented and challenging circumstances.
We are relying upon league-approved policies to determine a course of action in each situation. Although we anticipated some unintended consequences that may unfortunately impact standings, the plan was logical and consistent with other conferences nationally. Overall, I believe that we have been successful in working through the many challenges during a worldwide pandemic, rescheduling games when possible and producing seasons, that although not perfect, have been entertaining and offered quality experiences for our student-athletes.
We all look forward to next year when we can get back to a more normal competition environment. We thank everyone for their patience and understanding.
