SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford’s women’s soccer team has claimed the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Southern Conference Women’s Soccer Championship after posting an 7-0-2 league mark this season. The Bulldogs (7-1-3 overall), the defending SoCon tournament champions, have claimed at least a share of the regular-season title for the seventh straight year.
The tournament, which features just four teams due to the conference’s cost-cutting measures as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, features a pair of semifinals, hosted by the top-seeded Bulldogs and No. 2 seed Furman on April 9 or 10. The championship will be held at the site of the top remaining seed on April 16 or April 17.
Samford downed UNCG, 2-0, on Saturday to conclude the regular season. The Bulldogs will take on No. 4 Mercer (8-9-1, 5-3-0) in the semifinals. In the regular season, Samford beat Mercer, 2-1, on March 26 in Birmingham, Alabama.
Furman, who concluded its season with a 1-1 draw at Wofford on Friday, finished with a 6-0-2 league record. The Paladins will square off with Chattanooga (7-2-1, 6-2-1) who finished third, the program’s best finish in league history, and locked in the No. 3 seed. Furman beat Chattanooga, 2-0, in their regular-season meeting on March 19.
The tournament winner earns the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship.
