SPARTANBURG, S.C. – VMI first baseman Justin Starke and Wofford right-handed pitcher Elliot Carney have been named the Southern Conference player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for all games from April 12-18. The selections are made by the league office.
 
Starke earned his second straight player of the week honor after hitting .727 with a double, two home runs, four runs and four RBIs in VMI’s three-game sweep over Mercer, the conference’s Red Division leader headed into the series. He was 8-of-11 over the weekend, had one walk and boasted a .769 on-base percentage. Starke hit a walk-off single in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, tallying two runs with two outs in a 5-4 VMI victory, before the Keydets shut out the Bears 10-0 in the series finale. 
 
VMI (9-20, 5-10 SoCon) travels to Blacksburg, Virginia, for a 6 p.m. opening pitch Tuesday, April 20, against Virginia Tech before hosting Wofford for its weekend series. The first pitch is set for Friday, April 23, at 4 p.m. The doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 24.
 
Carney, the pitcher of the week, threw Wofford’s first no-hitter since the Terriers became members of Division I in 1996. He pitched his first career complete game against UNCG on Saturday, making him the first Terrier to pitch a complete game shutout since 2017. Carney struck out seven batters over a career-high nine innings in Wofford’s 5-0 win over the Spartans. The senior from Sammamish, Washington, allowed three walks, one each in the first, fourth and eighth innings. Carney leads the SoCon with 65 strikeouts.
 
Wofford (21-13, 10-5) will host College of Charleston on Wednesday, April 21, at 6 p.m. before traveling to Lexington, Virginia, to play conference foe VMI.
