ETSU leads after Day One of SoCon Women’s Golf Championship

Furman’s Rheaume leads the 45-player field after 36 holes

JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. –  ETSU women’s golf leads the nine-team playing field after two rounds of the 2021 Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championship at Oak Point Golf Club at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort on Monday. Furman’s Sarah-Eve Rheaume holds the individual lead and will enter the final day of the tournament with a six-shot lead.

The Bucs shot 584 (+8) and hold a three-shot lead after the first 36 holes. ETSU also leads the field with 25 birdies. One stroke separates the next three teams as Samford sits in second with a score of 587 (+11), Furman in third with a 588 (+12) and Mercer in fourth at 587 (+13).

Rheaume, who finished 10th at the 2019 championship, held the lead through both rounds with a first-round 2-under-par 70 and a second-round 4-under 68, which was the lowest score of the day. She began the day with four straight even-pars and a birdie on hole four before firing four birdies the second time out. The junior from Quebec, Canada, is the only player under par and is tied for the lead with three other players at seven birdies in the 45-player field. Rheaume made a jump from fourth to second place in the two rounds.

Samford’s Bailey Dunstan is second at an even-par 144 while ETSU’s Julia Goodson, Furman’s Madison Moosa and Chattanooga’s Dorota Zalewska are tied for third at 1-over-par 145. Goodson led the Bucs with a first-round 3-over-par 75 and followed through with a 2-under 70 in round two. Moosa, a senior, made a big jump from 16th place in the first round to end the day in third. Zalewska, a Szczecin, Poland, native, fired 2-over-par 74 in round one and 1-under-par 71 in round two.

It’s a tight race between the top-10 players with only three strokes separating Dunstan, who is in second, and the next eight golfers.

The team that wins the tournament will earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. The individual medalist will also earn an automatic regional qualification if she is not on the winning team.

The final round tees off at 8 a.m. on Tuesday and will conclude with the awards ceremony where the 2021 team and individual champions will be crowned. Live stats can be found here.
