Women's tennis championship pairings announced

No. 32 Furman earns top seed and looks to defend SoCon title

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced the pairings and times for the 2021 Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Championship on Sunday afternoon. Furman won the league’s regular-season crown and earned the top seed in the four-team tournament that will be held Friday, April 23, and Saturday, April 24, at the Hoover Met in Hoover, Alabama.

Furman, ranked 32nd nationally by the ITA, earned the No. 1 seed by finishing conference play with an unblemished 7-0 record, downing ETSU 5-2 in the regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon. The Paladins (19-6) will square off with No. 4 seed Samford (14-10, 4 -3 SoCon) on Friday at 2 p.m. CT in the first semifinal. Furman won the regular-season contest 7-0 on April 2.

ETSU (12-9, 6-1) earned the No. 2 seed, falling only to Furman and finishing 6-1 in league play, and will square off with No. 3 Wofford (12-5, 5-2), also on Friday at 2 p.m. CT. The Bucs bested the Terriers 6-1 on March 29 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Saturday’s championship match is set for 1 p.m. CT.

ETSU, Furman, Samford and Chattanooga are the only current SoCon members to have won the conference tournament. The Mocs won the first three tournaments (1984-86) and have five tournament championships to their credit. Furman leads all programs with 19 Southern Conference tournament championships after taking home its third straight title in 2019, the last contested tournament. Samford claimed its first tournament title in 2015 and ETSU won the 2016 tournament in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
