SoCon announces outdoor track athletes of the week

Furman runners sweep track awards

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Ryan Adams and Gabbi Jennings have been named the Southern Conference men’s and women’s outdoor track athletes of the week, respectively, while The Citadel’s JP Caglione and Samford’s Maggie Johnston have claimed outdoor field athlete of the week honors, respectively.
 
Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all competition from April 7-13.
 
Furman’s Adams finished sixth in the 1,500-meter run at the Joe Walker Invite, hosted by Ole Miss in Oxford, Mississippi, on Saturday. The senior from Hudson, Ohio, turned in a school-record time of 3:38.29 in the event, which leads the SoCon and ranks sixth on the NCAA Division I Outdoor Qualifying List.
 
Furman’s Jennings won the 1,500-meter run at the Joe Walker Invite on Friday. The senior from Slidell, Louisiana, posted the top time in the NCAA in the event this season, stopping the clock in a personal-best and Furman-record 4:12.60. Jennings also has the third-best NCAA time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase this season, as she posted a time of 9:56.30 at the Raleigh Relays on March 25.
 
The Citadel’s Caglione competed at the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, South Carolina, on Saturday, finishing fourth in the hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 56.41 meters, which improved on his second-best mark in program history, leads the SoCon by more than 15 feet and ranks 68th on the NCAA East Region performance list. The graduate student from Viera, Florida, also finished ninth in the shot put with a throw of 14.40 meters.
 
Samford’s Johnston competed in a trio of throws at the Crimson Tide Invite in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The senior from Macon, Georgia, finished ninth in the shot put on Thursday, turning in a SoCon-leading throw of 14.11 meters. She opened her competition on Saturday with a fourth-place finish in the discus with a personal-best throw of 51.99 meters, which also leads the SoCon this season and ranks 51st on the NCAA performance list and 23rd in the NCAA East Region. She capped her day with a 12th-place finish in the hammer, throwing the implement 47.78 meters.
