VMI's Herres named National Offensive Player of the Week

Herres caught 15 passes for 207 yards and three TDs Saturday

LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior wide receiver Jakob Herres was named the Stats Perform National Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday for his outstanding play in Saturday's 36-31 win over Wofford in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Named the SoCon Offensive Player of the Week presented by GEICO on Monday, Herres' national recognition marks the second time the Keydets have earned a national weekly honor this season as senior Connor Riddle earned National Defensive Player of the Week honors on March 1.

Against Wofford, Herres caught a career-high 15 passes out of 18 targets for 207 yards and three touchdowns – all career bests – and hauled in the 14-yard game-winning catch from quarterback Seth Morgan with 0:35 remaining in the contest. He also generated 30 yards after catch against the Terriers.

The win raised VMI's overall season record to 5-0 for the first time since 1960 and locked up the first winning season for the Keydets since 1981.

The 15 receptions by Herres on Saturday were the second-most in a single game in program history behind only Aaron Sanders' 16 catches at Mercer in 2015. The 207 yards receiving stands as the sixth-best mark on the VMI single-game charts. Herres now has 19 career touchdown receptions, which is just one behind all-time VMI leader Mark Stock (1984-88).

Over the last two weeks against Samford and Wofford, Herres has caught a combined 29 passes for 373 yards and five touchdowns.

VMI moved up to No. 10 in the latest Stats Perform FCS Top 25 poll released Monday and No. 10 in the AFCA poll released Tuesday. It is the highest national ranking in program history.

VMI takes on ETSU (3-1) Saturday in Lexington. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m. and the game will be carried on ESPN+ will live audio at 3wzfm.com and the TuneIn App.
