• Three Southern Conference games are on the Saturday schedule.

• After knocking off then-No. 11 Wofford last week, Chattanooga moved into the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 this week at No. 18. Furman, which fell at VMI, dropped seven spots to No. 17, and Wofford fell nine spots to No. 20. VMI and ETSU received votes in the poll.

• Chattanooga was impressive in its spring debut, rolling to a 24-13 win over Wofford. The win was the Mocs’ first over a ranked opponent since a 23-21 win at No. 8 Samford in 2017 and their highest-ranked win at home since a 38-17 victory over No. 10 Jacksonville State in 2011. Mocs Punter Gabe Boring was named the SoCon Special Teams Player of the Week presented by GEICO after punting three times for an average of 52.3 yards, putting all three inside the Terriers’ 20-yard line. He unleashed a career-long 72-yard punt with just 30 seconds left, Chattanooga’s longest since 2013. UTC held Wofford to just 199 yards of total offense.

• The Citadel enters Saturday’s contest against the Mocs seeking their first win of the season. The Bulldogs dropped a 42-28 decision at Mercer last week, scoring all 28 after halftime. The Citadel accumulated 413 yards of offense, with 338 yards coming on the ground. Jaylan Adams led the way with 144 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries.

• VMI linebacker Connor Riddle was named the Stats Perform FCS National Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the Keydets’ 14-13 win over Furman last Saturday. The redshirt senior had 13 tackles on the afternoon, with 4.5 of them going for 13 lost yards. Included in that total were 2.0 sacks for 8 yards, both of which came on Furman’s final drive as it was moving toward field-goal range. 

• The Keydets, who earned their first win over a ranked opponent since 2002, visit Western Carolina on Saturday. The Catamounts have won 17 straight in the series, with VMI’s last win coming in 1991.

• Western Carolina dropped to 0-5 on the season with its 55-27 loss at Samford last weekend. Redshirt sophomore kicker Richard McCollum hit a pair of career-long field goals in the second quarter, the first at 44 yards and the second at 45.

• Furman looks to rebound from its first loss of the season when it hosts Samford on Saturday. The Paladins surrendered nine sacks at VMI, their most since 1996, but got a career performance from receiver Ryan DeLuca, who caught seven passes for a career-high 142 yards.

• Samford’s offense will firing on all cylinders in its win over Western Carolina, with quarterback Liam Welch accounting for five touchdowns on the day. Welch ran for 83 yards and three scores and threw for a career-high 311 yards and two TDs on 26-of-36 passing, earning SoCon Offensive Player of the Week presented by GEICO honors. Running back Jay Stanton had 23 carries for 135 yards and a touchdown.

• Saturday’s ETSU at Wofford game has been postponed, as Wofford has dropped below the guideline of available players at a specific position group due to a combination of player COVID opt-outs and injuries.

• The Southern Conference is the only FCS league with each of its members participating in the spring season.
