SoCon weekly men’s lacrosse honors announced

Richmond claims fourth straight offensive award, JU’s Kapp nabs defensive honors

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Richmond’s Dalton Young and Jacksonville’s Nathan Kapp have been named the Southern Conference men’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all games March 23-29. The awards are selected by the league office.

Young was also named to the USILA Division I Team of the Week, where he was joined by Mercer’s Sean Goldsmith. Young was named to the USILA Team of the Week for the second time in three weeks.

Young scored a game-high six goals and added two assists for a game-high eight-point day as Richmond downed High Point 17-10 on Friday in a SoCon showdown. The sophomore from Chantilly, Virginia, notched a hat trick in the fourth period alone, scoring the Spiders’ final three goals of the game after notching a first-quarter goal and scoring twice in the second. Young scored six goals in a game for the second time in three games and has scored 16 times in three league contests so far. His six goals Friday tied for the second-most in a game in program history and tied for seventh on the SoCon’s single-game list behind six seven-goal games. Young picked up Richmond’s fourth straight SoCon offensive weekly award, as he and Ryan Lanchbury have alternated selections over the last four weeks.

Jacksonville’s Kapp also left his mark in the record books last week, as the redshirt freshman faceoff specialist had 18 ground balls and went 26-for-30 on faceoff attempts in the Dolphins’ 18-12 win over VMI on Saturday. The 18 ground balls matched JU’s program record and tie for second in a game in SoCon history, while the Middleton, Wisconsin, native’s 26 faceoff wins are second-most in program history – trailing only his 28 from earlier this season – and tie for third in a game in SoCon history. Kapp also added an assist on the day.

Richmond (4-3, 3-0 SoCon), up two spots to No. 14 in the Nike/US Lacrosse Magazine poll and ranked 13th in the USILA/Dynamic Coaches Poll and 17th in the Inside Lacrosse poll, visits Virginia on Saturday at 5 p.m. The Cavaliers are ranked fifth by the coaches and sixth in the Inside Lacrosse and Nike/US Lacrosse Magazine polls.

Jacksonville (5-3, 2-0) also steps out of conference Saturday when it faces Robert Morris for a 12 p.m. neutral-site contest in Fort Mill, South Carolina.

Other offensive nominees: August Johnson (Air Force), Asher Nolting (High Point), Jack Dolan (Jacksonville), Sean Goldsmith (Mercer) and Hartley Jordan (VMI).

Other defensive nominees: Braden Host (Air Force), Colin Kelley (Mercer) and Jack Rusbuldt (Richmond).
