SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNC Greensboro’s Brianna Gomez has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for all matches played March 22-28, the conference office announced Monday.
Gomez, a senior, went 2-0 at No. 2 singles, picking up a ranked win, and fell in a pair of doubles matches at No. 3.
The native of Miami, Florida, defeated Furman’s Julia Adams, ranked 77th nationally, in straight sets (6-4, 7-6), earning UNCG’s only point in a 6-1 setback to No. 34 Furman on March 26. Two days later, Gomez rallied from behind to beat UNCW’s Celeste Matute 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 to move to 6-2 on the year in singles play.
In doubles, Gomez and teammate Juliana Craft fell 6-3 to Furman’s duo and 6-2 against UNCW’s pair.
UNCG (4-4, 1-3 SoCon) hosts Appalachian State on Wednesday, March 31, and resumes conference play at ETSU (9-8, 3-0) on Friday, April 2.
