SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford’s Michael McMahan and VMI’s Solomon Ghosh have been named the Southern Conference men’s outdoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively, while Samford’s Amanda Dumar and Maggie Johnston took the awards on the women’s side. The weekly awards are the first ones of the outdoor season.
 
Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all outdoor competition to date.
 
Samford’s McMahan produced a pair of podium finishes at Georgia Tech’s Yellow Jacket Invitational over the weekend. The senior from Franklin, Tennessee, won the 400-meter hurdles in a conference-leading time of 52.58 seconds and finished second in the 110-meter hurdles to teammate Titus Moore, finishing just 0.02 seconds back in a personal-best 14.19 seconds. Both times are in the top 20 on the NCAA Division I Outdoor Qualifying list, with his 100m hurdle time good for 23rd and his 400m hurdle time good for 18th.
 
VMI’s Ghosh turned in a pair of conference-leading marks in the throws at High Point University’s Bill Webb Combined Events / Bob Davidson Memorial on Saturday. The redshirt freshman from Blacksburg, Virginia, finished fifth in the discus with a throw of 47.30 meters and claimed 11th in the shot put with a toss of 13.82 meters.
 
Samford’s Dumar was in action at the Yellow Jacket Invitational over the weekend, winning the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:02.48, the best mark in the league so far this season. The senior from Tampa, Florida, ranks 48th on the NCAA Division I Outdoor Qualifying list.
 
Also in action at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, Samford's Johnston, a senior from Macon, Georgia, won the discus with a throw of 51.39 meters, won the shot put with a heave of 13.76 meters and finished third in the hammer with a throw of 50.93 meters. Her discus mark leads the SoCon and ranks 23rd on the NCAA qualifying list on the young season, while her efforts in the shot put and hammer are both good for second in the league so far.
