SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its volleyball players of the week Tuesday for games played March 16-22. The Citadel outside hitter Sharlissa De Jesus was named the Offensive Player of the Week, Chattanooga libero Brenna Everingham was named the Defensive Player of the Week, and Wofford’s Emily Hodsdon was named the Setter of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.
De Jesus hit .400 and averaged 4.62 kills per set as The Citadel swept a pair of matches against UNCG. In Sunday’s match, the senior recorded 20 kills and 15 digs as she helped the Bulldogs claw back from a 2-0 deficit to earn a 3-2 win. The native of Guayama, Puerto Rico, also added four service aces and four blocks in the win. The following day, De Jesus hit .500 and led all players with 17 kills, not committing a single error on 34 swings, as she became the program’s all-time leader in career kills with 1,366. She added 14 digs and two aces in the 3-0 win.
Everingham had an impressive weekend as she earned the starting libero spot for the first time this season. The native of Noblesville, Indiana, tallied 24 digs in a 3-1 loss to Samford on Sunday, adding three service aces and two assists. The next day, the junior posted a match-high and career-high 34 digs with five assists and a service ace as the Mocs downed league-leading Samford, which entered the match riding an 11-match win streak, in a five-set thriller. Nineteen of Everingham’s assists came in the final two sets, including seven in the deciding fifth set. For the week, she averaged 6.44 digs per set.
Hodsdon, a freshman, earns her second honor of the season after averaging 10.38 assists per set as Wofford split a pair of matches against Furman. Hodsdon began the week with a match-high 34 assists in a 3-0 sweep of the Paladins on Sunday, adding two kills, two aces and six digs. In game two of the series, the native of Alpharetta, Georgia, tallied a match-high 49 assists and totaled 11 digs, earning her sixth career double-double, as Wofford fell in five sets.
The Citadel (8-11, 6-8) concludes regular-season play at Samford (12-2, 12-2) on Sunday, March 28, and Monday, March 29, while Chattanooga (6-10, 4-10) plays at ETSU (5-9, 5-9) on the same dates. Wofford (10-5, 10-5) concludes the regular season at Western Carolina (8-7, 8-5) on Thursday, March 25.
