ATLANTA – The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga edged out Emory for title the Clark Atlanta University Panther Invitational on Sunday. The Mocs scored 137 points with four top-place finishes and 18 in the top five.
Senior Nicole Buehrle ran a personal best in the 800-meter run, claiming the title with a time of 2:15.57. She followed that with a first-place finish in the 1,500-meter run at 4:45.73. Emmy Davis also posted a PR in the 800-meter with a time of 2:18.97.
Many of Chattanooga’s runners were making their debuts in the outdoor season at the meet due to the COVID-19 pandemic shut down of the season last spring.
One of those was McKenzie Williamson, who took first in the 200-meter dash. She also placed second in the 100-meter dash and Sage Davis was fourth with a personal best.
Another competing outdoors for the first time was Mikah Charley, who claimed the triple jump title, besting her PR from the indoor season with a distance of 10.68 meters. Kimbra Dunning was fourth in the triple jump and second in the long jump, just missing her personal best.
Charley placed third in the 400-meter hurdles.
Without the 5K or 10K races Sunday, the Mocs’ distance runners all competed in the 3,000-meter run. Lesley Green ran a PR in the race, placing second with a time of 10:19.17. Freshman Emma Russum was third at 10:29.88. Makenzie Jones was fifth in the race and Sophia Neglia placed seventh for the Mocs, all scoring.
Chattanooga concluded the meet with the 4x400 -meter relay and entered three teams. Team A with Buehrle, Davis, Broling Miller and Hagood took fifth overall with a time of 4:21.86.
With no meets currently on the schedule, some may be added. Due to the pandemic, not as many teams are being entered and some states restrict entrants to just that state.
