BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford women’s basketball team will take on the Ole Miss Rebels in the first round of the postseason WNIT in the Memphis Regional Friday at 5 p.m.
Also included in the Memphis Regional are UT Martin, Nebraska, Louisiana-Lafayette, Colorado, Illinois State and Tulane. Every team in the WNIT is guaranteed at least two games, with semifinals and consolation games set for Saturday, and the regional final and consolation final set for Monday.
This will mark the second time Samford has played in the postseason WNIT. In 2010 the Bulldogs hosted Ole Miss in the first round, earning a thrilling 66-65 win over the Rebels, before falling at Missouri State in the second round.
Samford had a stellar season, winning the Southern Conference regular-season title for a second-straight season, but winning the title outright for the first time. The Bulldogs posted a record of 14-9 overall and 11-2 in SoCon play. Samford head coach Carley Kuhns was named the league’s Coach of the Year following the regular season.
Samford is led by SoCon Player of the Year junior guard Andrea Cournoyer, who is averaging a school-record 18.7 points per game. Senior center Natalie Armstrong was also named first team All-SoCon after averaging 13.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Armstrong is the only player in Samford history to have at least 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 100 blocked shots in a career. Junior forward Annie Ramil earned second team All-SoCon honors, leading the team in rebounding, grabbing 8.3 boards per contest.
