SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford’s Natalie Armstrong has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week presented by GEICO for games played Feb. 23-28 after scoring 24 points and pulling down eight rebounds in Samford’s lone contest of the week, a 74-65 win at Mercer in the regular-season finale. The award is selected by the league office and is the final one of the 2020-21 campaign.
The senior center’s 24 points led all players. Armstrong, a native of Norcross, Georgia, shot 68.8 percent (11-for-16) from the floor in the win. The win gave Samford the outright regular-season title, the first in program history after the squad earned a share of the regular-season title a season ago.
Samford (14-8, 11-2 SoCon), the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Ingles Southern Conference Championship presented by General Shale, will take on No. 8 seed ETSU (3-15, 1-10) in the first game of the tournament on March 4 at 12 p.m. at the Harrah’s Cherokee Center Asheville in Asheville, North Carolina.
Also nominated: Amoria Neal-Tysor (Mercer), Khalis Cain (UNCG), Dena Jarrells (Chattanooga) and Kyla Allison (Western Carolina).
