SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford’s Annie Ramil has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week presented by GEICO for games played Feb. 2-8 after averaging 15.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in a pair of conference wins. The award is selected by the league office.
The junior began the week with 13 points and a game-high 16 rebounds in a 46-42 win over UNC Greensboro. The native of Binghamton, New York, shot 50 percent from the floor (6-of-12) and sank her lone free throw of the contest in 29 minutes of action. Two days later, the forward scored a game-high 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds, narrowly missing her second double-double of the week, in a 70-44 win over the Spartans. Ramil shot 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from the field and finished 6-of-8 from the free-throw line in the win.
For the week, Ramil was 48.0 percent from the floor (12-of-25) and 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from the charity stripe. Ramil leads the league in field-goal percentage both overall (54.7 percent) and in conference contests (55.8 percent).
After four consecutive home contests, Samford (11-7, 8-1 SoCon), alone atop the conference standings, heads to Spartanburg, South Carolina, to take on Wofford (10-6, 6-3) on Feb. 11 and Feb. 13.
