SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its volleyball players of the week Tuesday for games played Feb. 2-8. Samford outside hitter Lauren Deaton repeated as the Offensive Player of the Week, while Bulldogs teammate Corinne Meglic was tabbed the Setter of the Week. Furman libero Andrea Aceveda was named the Defensive Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office. 

Deaton averaged 5.75 kills per set as the Bulldogs won a pair of home matches against Western Carolina. In the first match, a 3-2 Samford win on Feb. 7, Deaton led all players with 32 kills, tying a career high, and added 20 digs to earn a double-double. She hit .268 and added two blocks, two assists, and two aces. The following day, the Memphis, Tennessee, native and preseason all-conference selection tallied a match-high 14 kills and hit .387 in the Bulldogs’ sweep over the Catamounts.

Aceveda, a sophomore, averaged 5.50 digs per set as Furman won a pair of road matches at The Citadel. The native of Brentwood, Tennessee, tallied a match-high 20 digs in the series opener on Feb. 7, adding a service ace in the 3-0 Furman win. The following day, Aceveda recorded a season-high 24 digs, again a match high, as Furman held on for a win in a five-set nail-biter.

Meglic, a redshirt junior, averaged 12.25 assists per set in the pair of Samford wins. The native of Green Bay, Wisconsin, tallied a double-double in the first matchup against Western Carolina, dishing out a match-high 60 assists and adding 20 digs in the Bulldogs’ win. She followed up that performance with a match-high 38 assists in the three-set sweep a day later.

Samford (3-1, 3-1 SoCon) hosts Wofford (2-0, 2-0) on Feb. 14 and Feb. 15, while Furman (2-2, 2-2) is off this weekend before playing at Chattanooga (4-2, 2-2) on Feb. 21 and Feb. 22.

Also nominated for defensive player of the week: Rayanne de Oliveira (Mercer), Grey Breen (UNCG), Emily Naubert (Samford), Destinee Dorsey (Western Carolina) and Riley Coonan (Wofford).

Also nominated for setter of the week: Katie Murphy (Furman), Malia Randolph (Mercer), Hannah Price (Western Carolina) and Emily Hodsdon (Wofford).
