Commish Chat is a series of one-on-one interviews between Southern Conference Commissioner Jim Schaus and various student-athletes, coaches, administrators, media members and more as they discuss SoCon athletics and issues that affect college athletics on a broader scale.
Schaus's guest for Episode 15 is Hampton first-year men's lacrosse coach Chazz Woodsoon. The SoCon announced on Friday that Hampton will be joining the league as an associate member in men's lacrosse effective July 1. The Pirates, who have been independent since the program's first varsity season in 2016, will be the first HBCU program to compete in a men's sport in SoCon history.
Schaus and Woodson discuss Woodson returning to his hometown area and what made the Hampton program so appealing for his first collegiate coaching job, the unique and inspiring circumstances around the founding of the Pirates' men's lacrosse program, the challenges of taking over a program in the middle of the COVID pandemic and not being able to play this spring, and what joining the SoCon means to the Hampton program.
