SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Julia Adams has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for all matches played Feb. 1-7, the conference office announced Monday.
Adams, a junior, went 2-0 at No. 2 singles and 2-0 at No. 1 doubles as Furman took down undefeated Alabama 4-3 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on Jan. 6 and upset 16th-ranked Wake Forest, 5-2, in Greenville, South Carolina, a day later.
In singles play, the native of Knoxville, Tennessee, clinched the match against Alabama, winning a third-set tiebreaker to down Alabama’s Moka Ito 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3). The next day, Adams earned a win over Wake Forest’s Brooke Killingsworth, fighting back to win in another third-set tiebreaker 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (9-7).
In doubles play, Adams and teammate Katarina Kozarov, ranked 27th as a duo, downed the Crimson Tide’s top duo, 6-3, and cruised past Wake Forest’s top pair, 6-2.
Furman (3-4) has three road matches this week. The Paladins play at South Carolina on Feb. 10, at Virginia Tech on Feb. 13 and at Marshall on Feb. 14.
Also nominated: Bogdana Zaporozhets (Chattanooga), Rouxanne Janse Van Rensburg (Samford) and Jenna Vroman (Wofford).
