Notes:
• Four Southern Conference games are on the schedule for Saturday, including The Citadel making its spring debut when it visits Mercer for the Ingles SoCon Game of the Week on select Nexstar affiliates.
• Furman is ranked No. 10 and Wofford is No. 11 in the first Stats Perform FCS Top 25 of the spring. The Citadel, ETSU and Chattanooga each received votes in the poll.
• A pair of SoCon student-athletes earned Stats Perform FCS National Player of the Week honors after the league’s first week of spring play. Wofford defensive end Michael Mason earned defensive player of the week laurels after recording eight tackles (seven solo), including three tackles for loss and two sacks that produced fumbles in a 31-14 win over Mercer. Western Carolina kicker Paxton Robertson earned special teams recognition after averaging 44.4 yards on eight punts and downing five inside Furman’s 20-yard line.
• The Citadel went 0-4 in the fall, facing three FBS programs, including then-No. 1 Clemson.
• The Bulldog defense is led by preseason All-American and preseason SoCon Defensive Player of the Year Willie Eubanks III. A finalist for the STATS FCS Buck Buchanan Award and a consensus All-American as a junior last season, Eubanks earned first-team honors from the AFCA, the Associated Press and Phil Steele and was a second-team pick by Stats Perform. Eubanks finished second in the league with 112 total tackles and an average of 9.3 per game and led the SoCon with 63 solo stops.
• Mercer, which played three fall contests, rushed for a season-high 181 yards in its 31-14 setback to Wofford. Nakendrick Clark led the way with 67 yards on the ground.
• The preseason SoCon Offensive Player of the Year, VMI quarterback Reece Udinski, will also make his spring debut Saturday when the Keydets host Furman. Udinski has thrown for more than 3,000 yards in each of the last two seasons and needs just 953 this season to move into the league’s top 10 for his career. The senior threw for a league-best 3,276 yards in 2019, pacing the SoCon in passing yards per game with 273.0 and total offense with 262.9 yards per game. Udinski set an FCS single-season record for consecutive passes without an interception, opening the season with 368 passes without one to surpass the previous FCS mark by 26 and smash the SoCon record by 165.
• Furman rolled up 533 yards of total offense in its 35-7 win over Western Carolina to open its season. Hamp Sisson passed for 207 yards and Devin Wynn ran for 106 yards and a score, becoming the 13th player in program history to surpass 2,000 career rushing yards.
• Chattanooga will make its spring debut Saturday, as well, when it hosts No. 11 Wofford. The Mocs’ game against VMI last Saturday was postponed due to COVID issues within the UTC program.
• Samford held an early 14-0 lead on ETSU on Saturday before seeing the Bucs rally for the 24-17 win. Quarterback Chris Oladokun went 35-for-54 for 222 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.
• The Southern Conference is the only FCS league with each of its members participating in the spring season.
