SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Ivan Mitric has been named the Southern Conference men’s tennis player of the week for all matches played Feb. 15-21, the conference office announced Monday.
Mitric, a senior, went 2-0 at No. 1 singles and 1-1 at No. 2 doubles as the Paladins fell to Georgia Southern, 4-3, and defeated UNCG, 7-0, in Furman’s first conference match of the season.
In singles play, the native of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, fought back to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 against Georgia Southern’s top player on Feb. 19 and won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0 against UNCG’s Ollie Palmer on Feb. 21.
In doubles play, Mitric and partner James Roelofse lost 6-4 against Georgia Southern’s Murphy McCullough and Tao Castillo, but rebounded to win 7-6 (7-5) against UNCG’s duo of Roger Rogowski and Cooper Wyett.
The Paladins (3-3, 1-0) host Kennesaw State on Sunday, Feb. 28, in Furman’s lone match of the week.
Also nominated: Phillip Quinn (The Citadel), Samuel MacLeod (Mercer), Rossouw Norval (Samford) and Bryce Keim (Wofford).
