The Citadel's Blumer named Student-Athlete of the Week

Holds a 3.91 GPA, set the Bulldogs’ pole vault school record

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Citadel’s Sam Blumer has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for all competition from Feb. 10-16. The selection is made by the conference office.
 
Blumer earned gold in the pole vault at the USC Indoor Open on Feb. 13 with a 5.01-meter (16-05.25) clearance to break the school’s previous record of 4.85 meters (15-11.00), set by Blumer and teammate Devin Merrick at the 2019 SoCon Indoor Track and Field Championships. His 5.01m mark is the second-highest vault in the conference this season. 
 
The Greenville, South Carolina, senior holds a 3.91 grade point average and is majoring in construction engineering. 
 
The Citadel track and field team competed in two meets this indoor season. The team returns to the track on Feb. 27 and 28 for the 2021 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship hosted by VMI in Lexington, Virginia. 
 
Also nominated for SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week: Olivia Cunningham (ETSU volleyball), Ashton Wood (Mercer men’s lacrosse), Malachi Smith (Chattanooga men’s basketball) and Merry Gebel (Western Carolina volleyball).
