SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Julia Adams has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for all matches played Feb. 8-14, the conference office announced Monday.
Adams, a junior, went 3-0 in singles play and 1-2 at No. 1 doubles as Furman took down 18th-ranked South Carolina, 5-2, on the road on Feb. 10, defeated Virginia Tech 4-1 in Blacksburg, Virginia, on Feb. 13, and closed the week with a close 4-3 loss at Marshall on Feb. 14.
In singles play, the native of Knoxville, Tennessee, made quick work of South Carolina’s Megan Davies, ranked 30th, cruising to a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 2. At Virginia Tech, Adams fought back to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 against Virginia’s Tech’s Rita Pinto, again playing at No. 2 in the lineup. Adams played in the top spot at Marshall and earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Daniela Dankanych, the Herd’s top player.
In doubles play, Adams and teammate Katarina Kozarov, ranked 27th as a duo, fell to South Carolina’s top pair, ranked 29th nationally, 2-6, but rebounded to win 6-4 against Virginia’s No. 1 duo. Adams partnered up with teammate Ellie Schoppe at Marshall and the Paladins’ duo suffered a 4-6 setback.
Coming off a busy week, Furman (5-5) has just one match on the slate this week, hosting Presbyterian on Thursday, Feb. 18.
Also nominated: Rouxanne Janse Van Rensburg (Samford) and Polina Goloputova (Chattanooga).
