ETSU falls in Friday contest at Duke

Bucs won doubles point in loss

DURHAM, N.C.  – The ETSU Men’s Tennis team dropped its fourth consecutive match to start the season, this time falling in a 5-2 decision at Duke on Friday afternoon. The match was played at Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham, N.C.

The Bucs got off to a strong start, claiming the doubles point away from the Blue Devils. The doubles tandem of Thiago Pernas and Juan Sebastian Zabala started ETSU on the right note with a 6-4 victory in the No. 3 slot. Following their win, Frazier Rengifo and Juan Lugo earned a 6-4 win of their own in the top doubles spot to boost the Bucs ahead, 1-0.

The Bucs could not maintain the momentum into singles play as the host Blue Devils rallied off five consecutive straight-set victories to take the clinching 5-1 advantage. Duke clinched the match from the No. 1 singles position as Garrett Johns upended Rengifo, 7-5, 6-1.

The lone ETSU singles win was provided by Dimitri Badra who earned his third singles win of the campaign. Badra claimed the first set in the No. 2 slot, besting Edu Guell by the final of 7-6(4). The redshirt sophomore then dropped the second set, 6-3. With the match in hand, the final singles battle went into a super tiebreaker with Badra coming out on top, 10-4.

The Bucs will return to action tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. when ETSU takes on No. 14 Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C.
