SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Katarina Kozarov has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for all matches played Jan. 25-31, the conference office announced Monday. The player of the week honor is the ninth of Kozarov’s career, moving her ahead of fellow Paladin Monica Arguello (2008-11) and setting a new league record.
Kozarov, a senior, went 2-0 at No. 1 singles, defeating two ranked opponents, and 1-0 at No. 1 doubles as Furman swept VCU, 7-0, in Richmond, Virginia, on Jan. 30 and fell at No. 10 Duke, 5-2, a day later.
In singles play, the native of Novi Sad, Serbia, ranked No. 15 nationally, defeated VCU’s Paolo Diaz Delgado, ranked No. 116, 6-2, 0-6, 6-4. The next day, the two-time SoCon Player of the Year defeated Duke’s Kelly Chen, ranked No. 8, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) to cap off the week.
In doubles play, Kozarov and teammate Julia Adams, ranked 27th as a duo, swept VCU’s top duo 6-0 and were leading 5-3 against Duke’s top pair but the match went unfinished.
Furman (1-4) takes on Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on Feb. 6 and hosts Wake Forest the following day.
Also nominated: Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga (ETSU), Emma Van Hee (Chattanooga) and Kata Foldeak (Western Carolina).
