UNCG falls to College of Charleston, 75-68

GREENSBORO, N.C.  - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team fought hard to keep its home streak alive at Fleming Gym, but the College of Charleston stepped out in front at the end of halftime and didn't look back taking the win 75-68.
 
In her second-career start, freshman Nasia Powell dropped a career-best eight points, while three Spartans tallied double-digit points.
 
With six tied scores and five lead changes, the Cougars forced 21 turnovers, while the Spartans outrebounded the College of Charleston 38-31.
 
By the Numbers
  • Three Spartans led the way with double-digit points, as graduate student Aja Boyd recorded a team-high 15 points.
  • Freshman Nia Howard and senior Jaylynn Brown chipped in 14 and 11 points, respectively.
  • Howard was one point shy of matching her career-best.
  • Powell recorded a career-high eight points in her second-career start in the Blue & Gold.
  • UNCG saw freshman Isys Grady, sophomore Khalin Cain, and Boyd register seven rebounds each. Boyd matched a season-best seven boards.

How It Happened
  • The Spartans kicked off the game with a long bucket from behind the arc from Howard and then extended their lead to five, 7-2, with a layup from Powell.
  • The Cougars tied the game four times in the first quarter, including hitting a final three-pointer with 46-seconds remaining in the frame.
  • Boyd recorded six of the Spartans' 17 points in the second quarter and snatched three of eight rebounds.
  • The College of Charleston took a one-point lead, 38-37, at the end of the second quarter and continued pressuring UNCG.
  • Howard was perfect through three quarters shooting 5-for-5 in field goals, 3-for-3 behind the arc, and 1-for-1 at the charity stripe.
  • With their seventh three-pointer of the game, the Cougars saw the biggest lead of the game at nine, 56-47.
  • The Spartans came within two, 64-62, following an 8-2 run in the fourth quarter and tied it with Brown's third field goal of the game.
  • Brown scored the next two baskets for the Spartans, but the Cougars secured their fourth-straight road win with an 11-2 run, 75-68.
