SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga’s Abbey Cornelius has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week presented by GEICO for games played Nov. 30-Dec. 6 after averaging 15.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game and shooting 50 percent from the floor in a pair of contests against SEC opponents. The award is selected by the league office.
Cornelius, a junior center, scored nine points and pulled down nine rebounds, narrowly missing a double-double in a 91-61 loss at Vanderbilt on Nov. 30. She went 4-for-6 from the field (66.7 percent) and added a block in 31 minutes played. On Dec. 5 against Alabama, the Knoxville, Tennessee, native led the Mocs with 22 points, tying her career high, and 10 rebounds, both of which were team highs. The double-double was her second of the season, while she netted 20-plus points for the third time in 2021-22. The SoCon preseason all-conference selection went 7-for-16 from the floor and a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line in an 80-64 loss.
Chattanooga (1-8) plays at Eastern Kentucky on Thursday, Dec. 9, in the Mocs’ lone contest of the week.
