SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman forward Jalen Slawson has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week presented by GEICO for all contests from Nov. 29 to Dec. 5 after averaging 22.5 points and 13.5 rebounds in overtime wins over High Point and College of Charleston. The award is selected by the league office.
Slawson opened his week with 12 points in Furman’s 74-70 double-overtime win at High Point on Tuesday, tying his career high with 14 rebounds. The senior from Summerville, South Carolina, also added four assists, three blocked shots and two steals on the day. On Friday, Slawson added his second double-double of the week, scoring a career-high 33 points and bringing down 13 rebounds in a 91-88 overtime win over the Cougars. Slawson, who scored seven of his points in the extra session to lead the Paladins to the win, was 9-for-17 (.529) from the floor on the day and went 13-for-18 (.722) from the free-throw line. He had three assists, two blocked shots and a steal.
Slawson leads the SoCon in rebounding (9.1 per game), defensive rebounding (7.4), steals (2.1) and blocked shots (2.4).
Furman (6-2) is back in action Tuesday when it visits two-time defending Big South champion Winthrop at 7 p.m. and returns home to host defending Sun Belt champion App State on Friday at 7 p.m.
