SPARTANBURG, S.C. – App State’s Thomas Flitz has been named the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for all competition from Dec. 15-21. The selection is made by the league office.
Flitz went 2-0 at 174 pounds this week, securing a 6-5 victory over North Carolina’s No. 9 Clay Lautt on Friday, Dec. 17, and scoring a major decision in the Mountaineers’ first SoCon dual match of the season on Sunday, Dec. 19. Flitz traded first-period takedowns with Lautt before following a second-period escape with another takedown to grab a 6-3 lead and eventual 6-5 win to improve to 3-1 against Lautt in their four matchup appearances during their college careers. Following his 6-5 decision over Lautt, the super senior wrestler clinched his second victory of the week by notching a 9-1 major decision over Bellarmine’s Eric Beck. The Monroe, North Carolina, native enters his final semester with a career record of 74-51, including a 19-7 record in SoCon duals.
The Mountaineers (1-2, 1-0 SoCon) return to action on Jan. 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, at Chattanooga’s Southern Scuffle tournament before hosting The Citadel (2-2, 0-0 SoCon) in Boone, North Carolina, on Jan. 7 at 7 p.m.
