SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga women’s basketball player Abbey Cornelius has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for all competition from Dec. 15-21. The selection is made by the conference office.
 
Cornelius averaged 14.0 points per game and 9.7 rebounds per game to lead the Mocs in their three appearances last week against Cincinnati, North Alabama, and UNC Asheville. She scored in double figures in all three games and posted a double-double in Chattanooga’s 62-51 victory over the Bulldogs on Monday, Dec. 20, with 12 points and a season-high tying 16 rebounds. The junior forward scored 18 points and matched her career high for blocked shots with five in the Mocs’ 71-74 loss to the Lions on Saturday, Dec. 18, moving into third all-time for Chattanooga in that category, and she also added 12 points and five rebounds in the Mocs’ 63-52 loss to the Bearcats on Wednesday, Dec. 15. She also went 12-of-12 from the free throw line on the week, netting all six against both Cincinnati and North Alabama. The Knoxville, Tennessee, native leads the SoCon in defensive rebounds, is second for overall rebounds and third for scoring, and ranks in the top 10 in defensive boards in the NCAA. 
 
Cornelius maintains a 3.97 grade point average and is pursuing a degree in human health performances with an emphasis in exercise science.
 
Chattanooga (2-11, 0-0 SoCon) will travel to Knoxville, Tennessee, on Monday, Dec. 27, for a nonconference game against Tennessee at 6:30 p.m. ET before traveling to Jacksonville, Alabama, on Thursday, Dec. 30, for a nonconference game against Jacksonville State at 6:15 p.m. ET.
