GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) Baseball team came together over the holidays to raise money and buy presents for several kids at the Brooks Global Studies Magnet School in Greensboro, N.C.

As a team, they raised over $900 to buy presents for three students in kindergarten and grades second and fourth. 

"The Brooks Global Community appreciates the generosity of the UNCG Baseball team," said Dr. Darcy Kemp, the principal of Brook Global. "Their kindness has helped several families; know they are supported and loved during this difficult time."

This was the first time the UNCG Baseball program has partnered with the Brooks Global School to help families in need.

"I am so proud of our student-athletes for stepping up and helping families during the holidays," said UNCG head coach Billy Godwin. "We have tremendous young men in our program that have a desire to be servant leaders. Coach [Greg Starbuck], along with our players were instrumental in making this happen for these families. One of the key goals in the culture of our baseball program is to aid in serving our community."

Helping the community isn't a new task for this group of guys. Earlier this year, they participated in a canned food drive where they donated more than any other UNCG team.

Senior Greg Hardison and junior Zack Budzik had the pleasure of assisting Coach Starbuck in picking out and wrapping the presents for the families.

"Our goal was to make a difference in the community and to help some local families who were in need of help," said Hardison. "It's amazing how influential our simple act of giving was, and we all were reminded of how grateful we should be."

"Doing this for these families really means a lot," said Budzik. "It always feels good to help people out and provide a Christmas for those who may not have had the opportunity otherwise. To know we will put smiles on those kids' faces is a really special feeling."

Brooks Global Studies Extended Year Magnet School is an elementary school in Guilford County Schools and was opened in 1992. The mission of Brooks Global Studies is to engage students in a curriculum that focuses on diverse cultures and prepares students to become caring and successful citizens in an ever-changing global society.
