SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga men’s basketball player Malachi Smith has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for all competition from Nov. 17-23. The selection is made by the conference office.
 
Smith scored 20 points and hit the game-winning shot with less than a second left in the Mocs’ 56-54 road win over VCU on Saturday, helping Chattanooga improve their record to 4-0. He finished with five boards, two assists and two steals and went 7-for-12 (.583) from the floor, hit both 3-point attempts and went 4-for-5 from the free-throw line. Three days later, the sophomore guard scored 14 points and added six assists and six rebounds in the Mocs’ 100-39 win over Covenant, sending Chattanooga to a 5-0 record and extending its non-conference win streak to 17 games. This is the second honor for Smith this week, as the Belleville, Illinois, native earned SoCon Player of the Week accolades on Monday, Nov. 22.
 
Smith, who is a junior academically, maintains a 3.32 grade point average and is pursuing a degree in human health performances with an emphasis in sport, outdoor recreation, & tourism management.
 
Chattanooga hosts the College of Charleston in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on Saturday at 4 p.m., before traveling to Cookeville, Tennessee, on Tuesday, Nov. 30, to face off against Tennessee Tech at 7 p.m.
