SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer’s Jaron Dougherty has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week presented by GEICO for games played Nov. 9-15 after averaging 17.3 points and 12.3 rebounds per game as the Bears went 2-1 to open the 2021-22 season. The award is selected by the league office.

Dougherty began her senior campaign by scoring a team-high 18 points, pulling down four rebounds, dishing out one assist and tallying a pair of blocks in a 68-55 loss to Wake Forest on Nov. 9. Two days later, the forward netted 15 points, tied for the team high, in a 61-57 win over App State. Dougherty, a preseason all-conference selection, pulled down 20 rebounds and added three assists and two steals. The native of Buford, Georgia, rounded out the week with a team-high 19 points and 13 rebounds in a 75-66 home win over Troy.

After three consecutive home games, Mercer hits the road for four straight contests, beginning with a matchup with the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens, Georgia, on Tuesday, Nov. 18. The Bears also play at Gardner-Webb on Sunday, Nov. 21.

Also nominated: Jaila Roberts (ETSU), Khalis Cain (UNCG), Andrea Cournoyer (Samford), Abbey Cornelius (Chattanooga), Nadia Marshall (Western Carolina) and Alexis Tomlin (Wofford).
