SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman guard Mike Bothwell has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week presented by GEICO for all contests from Nov. 9-14 after averaging 26.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists and shooting 53 percent from the floor in wins over North Greenville and Louisville to open the season. The award is selected by the league office.
 
Bothwell was also named the Lou Henson National Player of the Week, CollegeInsider.com announced Monday.
 
Bothwell got his 2021-22 campaign off to a solid start with 22 points and four rebounds in a 118-86 win over NGU on Tuesday. The senior from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, was 9-for-13 (.692) from the floor, including a 3-for-5 showing from 3-point range. He made his only free-throw attempt and added four assists and three steals as Furman set program records for 3-pointers (22) and assists (34) in a game.
 
Three days later, Bothwell scored 30 points as the Paladins downed Louisville 80-72 in overtime for their first win over an Atlantic Coast Conference team since the 2000-01 season. Bothwell turned in a career-best 13-for-15 performance from the free-throw line, including a 5-for-6 effort in overtime. He again made three 3-pointers and had four rebounds and added two assists as Furman snapped the Cardinals’ 59-game winning streak in November home games.
 
Furman is back in action Monday night at two-time defending Ohio Valley Conference champion Belmont, which sits No. 2 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25. Opening tip is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
