SoCon 100th anniversary docuseries to debut in 2022

League collaborating with EMMY© Award-winning producer Richmond Weaver

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – As it continues to celebrate its 100th anniversary, the Southern Conference will collaborate with EMMY© Award-winning producer Richmond Weaver to produce a docuseries highlighting the history of the conference from 1921-2021.

The five-episode docuseries “Super Conference” will highlight the rich history of the conference that began in 1921 and currently consists of 10 members in six states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 21 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships.

The docuseries will extend beyond the origin of the conference in 1921 to the significant milestones throughout the past 100 years as a pioneer in intercollegiate athletics and as a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models.

Indie film company Triple R Productions and Weaver (“Clemson’s Greatest Games”) will produce the docuseries in conjunction with 9/8 Central. Production has begun on the project with the conference providing archival footage and the filmmakers traveling the country conducting interviews and shooting scenes.

The docuseries will embed historical events throughout the five episodes dedicated to highlighting significant moments including the first 3-point shot in college basketball, arguably the greatest upset in college football history, and the long-standing tradition of cutting down the nets following basketball championship wins.

“Arguably, there isn’t one conference that’s played a more significant role in college athletics,” Triple R Productions founder Weaver said. “The conference has been the original home for some of the most prominent teams and individuals that have impacted the world of sports. The goal of this project is to make sure that people truly understand this history.”

Weaver was inspired to share the history of the conference after reading the coffee table book titled “A Proud Athletic History: 100 Years of the Southern Conference,” written by former Southern Conference Commissioner John Iamarino.

Current SoCon Commissioner Jim Schaus has spearheaded various initiatives throughout 2021 to celebrate a century of athletic and academic achievements.

“We’re so proud of our 100 years of successes, both on the field of play and in the classroom,” he said. “This league has been a leader and an innovator in college athletics since its inception and we’ll strive to continue to do those things throughout our next century. There have been so many outstanding student-athletes, coaches, teams and highlights to promote over the years and we’re really excited to work with Richmond as he creates a series to share all of these stories.”

Weaver will serve as executive producer and host while Will Stewart, an EMMY© Award winner, is directing the docuseries.

The documentary is scheduled for release in the summer of 2022.
