Chattanooga's Cornelius named Student-Athlete of the Week

Holds a 3.96 GPA and averaged 17.5 points, 11.5 rebounds last week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga’s Abbey Cornelius has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for all competition from Jan. 20-26. The selection is made by the conference office.
 
Cornelius, also named the SoCon Women’s Basketball Player of the Week presented by GEICO on Tuesday, averaged 17.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game with a 62.5 shooting percentage. She led the Mocs with a double-double against Samford in Thursday’s game with a season-high 18 points and 15 rebounds. On Saturday, Chattanooga handed Samford its first SoCon loss with Cornelius going 8-of-10 from the field with 16 points, eight rebounds, six assists, two steals and a pair of blocked shots. She ranks 25th in the NCAA in blocks and is sixth all-time at UTC. She leads the conference in field-goal percentage (.567) and blocked shots (28).
 
The Knoxville, Tennessee, junior holds a 3.96 grade point average and is majoring in exercise science.
 
The Mocs (8-6, 3-2 SoCon) travel to Macon, Georgia, on Thursday, Jan. 28, to continue SoCon play against Mercer (10-4, 4-1) at 7 p.m.
