SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Cameron Ponder and Samford’s Jed Sisco have been named the Southern Conference men’s indoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively, while Furman’s Megan Marvin and Wofford’s Madeline McNinch claimed the honors on the women’s side, the conference office announced Wednesday.
 
Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all competition thus far.
 
Furman’s Ponder turned in a sub-4:00 mile at the Samford Invite on Friday, Jan. 22, winning the event in a meet-record 3:59.34, also a facility record for the Birmingham Crossplex. The junior from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, leads the SoCon by more than 10 seconds in the event and is second on the NCAA Division I Indoor Qualifying List.
 
At the same meet, Samford’s Sisco, a freshman from Morrow, Ohio, won the pole vault by clearing 5.05 meters (16 feet, 6 3/4 inches). His height bested the field by 0.20 meters and leads the SoCon on the season. He is 33rd on the NCAA performance list in the event.
 
Furman’s Marvin won the 800-meter run at the Samford Invite on Friday. The freshman from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, claimed her collegiate indoor debut race in 2:10.82, the best time in the SoCon on the season and good for 28^th on the NCAA Division I Indoor Qualifying List.
 
Wofford’s McNinch finished second in the long jump in her debut meet, turning in a leap of 5.83 meters (19 feet, 1 1/2 inches) at the VMI Team Challenge on Saturday, Jan. 23. The freshman from Bradenton, Florida, also competed on the track, winning the 200-meter run in 24.99 seconds and running the third leg of the Terriers’ third-place 4x400-meter relay. McNinch’s long-jump effort leads the SoCon and is tied for 50th on the NCAA performance list, while her 200m time is good for second in the league.
