SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga’s Abbey Cornelius has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week presented by GEICO for games played Jan. 19-25 after averaging 17.5 points and 11.5 rebounds and shooting 65.2 percent in a pair of conference contests. The award is selected by the league office.
Cornelius, a junior, began the week with a team-high 18 points and a game-high 15 rebounds in a 71-60 loss to Samford, who remained undefeated in SoCon play with the win. The native of Knoxville, Tennessee, shot 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from the floor and made all four of her free-throw attempts. Two days later, the center scored a team-high 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds, finishing 8-of-10 from the floor to shoot an impressive 80 percent. She added a game-high six assists, a pair of blocks and a pair of steals as the Mocs defeated Samford 70-57 and handed the Bulldogs their first loss in league play.
Cornelius leads the league in field-goal percentage (56.7 percent) and blocks (28).
After back-to-back home games, Chattanooga (8-6, 3-2 SoCon) hits the road to take on Mercer (10-4, 4-1 SoCon), one of three teams atop the league standings, on Jan. 28 and Jan. 30.
