Furman's Kozarov named women's tennis player of the week

Paladins' senior went 3-0 at No. 1 singles and 2-1 at No. 1 doubles against three SEC foes

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Katarina Kozarov has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for all matches played Jan. 16- 24, the conference office announced Monday. The player of the week honor is the eighth of Kozarov’s career, tying fellow Paladin Monica Arguello (2008-11) for the league record.
 
Kozarov, a senior, went 3-0 at No. 1 singles and 2-1 at No. 1 doubles as Furman fell to SEC foes Auburn (4-3), Tennessee (5-2) and Mississippi State (6-1).
 
In singles play, the native of Novi Sad, Serbia, ranked No. 15 nationally, defeated Auburn’s Selin Ovunc, ranked 62nd, 6-1, 6-2 on Jan. 17. The next day, the two-time SoCon Player of the Year defeated Tennessee’s Carly Briggs, ranked 118th, 7-6 (0-1), 4-6, 1-0 (10-2). On Jan. 24, Kozarov downed Mississippi State’s Tamara Racine 6-1, 6-4 to cap off a 3-0 week.
 
In doubles play, Kozarov and teammate Julia Adams, ranked 27th as a duo, lost 4-6 to Auburn’s 11th-ranked top duo but rebounded to down Tennessee’s top pair, 6-4, and Mississippi State’s No. 1 duo, 6-3.
 
Furman (0-3) takes on VCU in Richmond, Virginia, on Jan. 30, and plays at Duke the following day.
