SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Citadel’s Hayden Brown has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week presented by GEICO for all contests from Jan. 5-11 after scoring a career-high 37 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in a win over Chattanooga in the Bulldogs’ league opener. The award is selected by the league office.
 
After missing his first five shots of the day, Brown went 10-for-12 from the floor the rest of the way as the Bulldogs remained perfect on the season with a 92-87 win over the Mocs on Saturday. The forward from Greer, South Carolina, was 7-for-10 from 3-point range and 10-for-12 from the free-throw line in the contest. Brown’s 37 points were a season high for a SoCon player and marked his second 30-point outing of the season. He is the only league player to score at least 30 points this season.
 
Brown, whose double-double was his fifth of the 2020-21 campaign, leads the league in scoring (23.4 points per game) and rebounding (10.7 per game). His scoring mark ranks fourth in NCAA Division I.
 
The win was The Citadel’s first in league play since Feb. 23, 2019, snapping a 20-game losing streak, and came against a Chattanooga squad that entered the contest ranked No. 22 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25. The Bulldogs are receiving votes in that poll.
 
The Citadel, one of eight remaining unbeaten teams in Division I, is off to its best start since opening the 1919-20 campaign 11-0. The Bulldogs put their 8-0 (1-0 SoCon) mark on the line Wednesday when they host Furman (8-3, 2-0 SoCon) at McAlister Field House. The schools announced Tuesday that tip time has been moved up to 3 p.m. from the original 7 p.m. start.
