SoCon football notes: week 3

The Citadel hosts Eastern Kentucky on Saturday

Sept. 26 (Saturday)
Eastern Kentucky at The Citadel (ESPN3), 1 p.m.
* Note: Originally scheduled for ESPN+, the game will now air on ESPN3.

Notes:
• The Citadel hosts its lone home contest and takes on its only FCS opponent of the fall on Saturday when it welcomes Eastern Kentucky of the Ohio Valley Conference to Johnson Hagood Stadium. The teams will be meeting for the first time.

• Both squads enter Saturday’s contest with 0-2 records after opening their campaigns against consecutive FBS opponents. The Colonels opened the season with a 59-0 loss at Marshall on Sept. 5 before falling 56-10 at West Virginia on Sept. 12. The Citadel dropped a season-opening contest at South Florida 27-6 on Sept. 12 before suffering a 49-0 loss at No. 1 Clemson on Sept. 19.

• Citadel wide receiver Raleigh Webb had a 22-yard catch against Clemson, moving his career all-purpose total to 2,011 yards.

• Quarterback Brandon Rainey enters Saturday’s contest against EKU with 1,981 career rushing yards and 1,995 all-purpose yards.

• Willie Eubanks III and Sean-Thomas Faulkner had nine tackles each to lead the Bulldogs against the Tigers.

• Redshirt sophomore Javonte Middleton, making his first career start at cornerback, had seven tackles and forced and recovered a fumble.

• Junior Matthew Campbell, a member of the FCS Preseason Punter of the Year Award watch list, punted 10 times for an average of 41.8 yards in the loss at Clemson.

• Redshirt sophomore quarterback Jaylan Adams saw his first action under center in the fourth quarter, rushing for 50 yards on 12 carries. Adams also contributes on special teams and is second in the FCS with a kickoff return average of 19.0 yards so far this season.

• The Citadel became the first FCS team to face the No. 1 FBS team three times. The Bulldogs also faced No. 1 Florida State in 2014 and No. 1 Alabama in 2018.

• Prior to the Clemson contest, The Citadel had gone 109 games and nearly 10 years since its last shutout loss, a streak that had been the longest active one in the SoCon. The Bulldogs’ last shutout loss before the Clemson contest came in the form of a 35-0 setback to then-No. 9 Wofford on Oct. 30, 2010.

• The Terriers, coincidentally, now have the longest active scoring streak in the SoCon, with their last shutout loss coming 81 games ago, in 2013.

• Furman is ranked No. 15 and Wofford is No. 16 in the Stats Perform 2020 Preseason FCS Top 25. The Citadel and Chattanooga also received votes in the poll, with the Bulldogs finishing as the third team out. Stats Perform will not conduct a weekly poll this fall.

• The Citadel was ranked No. 21 in the Athlon Sports and HERO Sports preseason polls.

• The SoCon will be idle on Oct. 3 before The Citadel closes its fall slate at Army West Point and Mercer opens its campaign at Jacksonville State on Oct. 10.
