Mercer's Dimitrijevic signs with Spanish pro squad

Guard will play for Club Ourense Baloncesto in the second division of the Spanish Basketball League

MACON, Ga. – Former Mercer Bear Djordje Dimitrijevic became the first player from the Greg Gary era to sign a pro contract, coming to terms with Club Ourense Baloncesto on Tuesday morning.

“I’m thrilled for Djordje and the opportunity he has to take his game to the next level,” remarked Gary. “He was instrumental in our success last season and will be an excellent professional player.”

Dimitrijevic spent two seasons in the Orange and Black and capped a stellar senior season with a multitude of on-court and academic hours.

The Gredelica, Serbia, native was named a first-team All-Southern Conference selection by the SoCon Sports Media Association and received a second-team nod by the league’s coaches. In his final season, he led the Bears in scoring with an average of 16.8 points per game. Dimitrijevic reached double figures in scoring in 25-of-32 contests and eclipsed the 20-point mark 10 times. He finished fourth among the SoCon’s leaders in scoring (16.7 ppg), assists per game (3.7) and free-throw percentage (.848).

The sharpshooting guard shot a career-best 42.5 percent from the floor. He connected on nearly 40 percent of his attempts from 3-point range and set career highs in points (34), 3-point field goals made (6), rebounds (10), assists (10) and steals (6).

Academically, Dimitrijevic was named a second-team Academic All-American in March by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He received more academic accolades in July when he earned a spot on the National Association of Basketball Coaches’ (NABC) Honor Court, which honors student-athletes of junior or senior standing with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Dimitrijevic’s new team, the Club Ourense Baloncesto, was founded in 1978 as Club Bosco-Salesianos and began play in the Third Division League. Six years later, the squad was promoted to the Segunda Division. Currently, the team competes in Liga LEB Oro, the second division of the Spanish Basketball League, which features 18 teams. Much is at stake each season for the club as the winner of the LEB Oro regular season and playoffs are promoted to Liga ACB, the top tier of Spanish basketball.
