SoCon promotes Broaden, hires Washington, Hunt

Broaden elevated to Assistant Commissioner for Championships; Washington, Hunt department assistants

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference is promoting current staff member Stanley Broaden and adding two department assistants for the 2020-21 academic year, Commissioner Jim Schaus announced Wednesday.
 
Broaden has been elevated to Assistant Commissioner for Championships, effective immediately. Jasmine Washington will join the SoCon staff as the Media Relations Assistant for the upcoming academic year, with a start date of July 13, while Nicholas Hunt will serve as this year’s Championships Assistant, starting July 21.
 
Broaden has served as the SoCon’s Director of Championships since joining the staff in April 2018. The Wilmington, North Carolina, native is responsible for the management and coordination of SoCon championship tournaments and the league's awards and merchandising efforts. A two-sport student-athlete at Appalachian State, Broaden was a first-team All-SoCon performer in soccer in 2013 and won titles in the 60-meter hurdles at the 2013 SoCon Indoor Track and Field Championships, setting a championship record (7.90 seconds) that stood until 2020, and in the 110-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles at the outdoor championships. Broaden came to the SoCon after completing a postgraduate internship in championships & alliances at the NCAA office in Indianapolis and serving as a graduate assistant in athletics administration at Appalachian State.
 
Washington graduated in May from the University of Maryland, where she double-majored in public relations and criminology/criminal justice. A member of the Alpha Lambda Delta and Communication honor societies and a recipient of a 2019 Barack Obama Presidential award, Washington was as a media relations intern for the Terrapins, serving as the primary contact for the track & field and cross country programs. In that role, she created the programs’ first-ever official media guide and helped increase the programs’ Instagram followers by 1,000. A Woodbridge, Virginia, native, Washington also wrote feature stories on Maryland football players, contributed to social media accounts for other Terp programs and assisted at the 2019 Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament in Indianapolis and at the NCAA Championship first and second rounds hosted by Maryland. Washington also completed public relations/communications internships at West End Strategy Team in Washington, D.C., and the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism in College Park, Maryland. She was also the Public Relations and Media Marketing Chair for Maryland’s chapter of the NAACP, for which she later served as president.
 
Hunt comes to the SoCon after serving as a graduate assistant in the ticketing department at the University of Nebraska, where he earned a master’s degree in business with a specialization in intercollegiate athletics administration. In his role with the Huskers’ ticketing department, Hunt provided operational support for nine ticketed sports, assisted the Husker Athletic Fund with annual fund and ticketing payment input and solicitation, and assisted fans with inquiries about tickets, donor relations, renewals, parking and general information about Nebraska athletics and events. Hunt, who also served as a teaching assistant in Nebraska’s Department of Marketing, held various roles at the Atlantic Coast Conference prior to his move to Nebraska, working as a database manager, a ticket sales representative and an operations intern. He also interned with Opendorse in Lincoln, Nebraska, and with the Hickory Crawdads, a Single A Minor League Baseball team in his hometown of Hickory, North Carolina. Hunt graduated from Charlotte with a degree in business administration in 2017.
