No. 9 seed VMI 96, No. 8 seed Samford 78
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – VMI jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 96-78 win over Samford in the first round of the Ingles Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Championship presented by General Shale. It was a wire-to-wire win, the first this season against a DI opponent for the Keydets.
Jake Stephens’ career-high 24 points led VMI. Greg Parham contributed 16 off the bench with Travis Evee (15), Kamdyn Curfman (14) and Myles Lewis (13) close behind. Brandon Austin paced the Bulldogs with 20, while Robert Allen added 17 points and 13 rebounds. Josh Sharkey also had a double-double, registering 19 points and 10 assists, and Deandre Thomas scored 10.
The Keydets scored 13 of the first 17 points with Stephens’ 3-pointer 3:51 into the contest providing an early spark. Samford cut it to six twice midway through the opening half, but VMI was only beginning. Thomas’ layup with 4:29 left in the half made it an 11-point game, 36-25, before the Keydets pulled away with a 16-5 run for a 52-30 halftime cushion.
VMI’s lead reached 34, 69-35, on Sean Conway’s 3 with 15:04 to play. Despite the long odds, Samford battled. Allen cut the margin to 18, 74-56, capping seven unanswered points. While the Bulldogs would not relent, the Keydets provided no quarter down the stretch, securing the win.
The Keydets move into a quarterfinals date with top-seeded ETSU on Saturday. The game starts at noon in Harrah’s Cherokee Center Asheville, broadcasting on select Nexstar affiliates as well ESPN+.
