SoCon announces baseball players of the week

The Citadel's Noah Mitchell and Wofford's Hayes Heinecke honored

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Citadel infielder Noah Mitchell and Wofford left-hander Hayes Heinecke have been named the Southern Conference player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for all games Feb. 24 – March 1. The selections are made by the league office.

Mitchell posted three multi-hit games in the three contests he played in during the week. The freshman from Greenville, South Carolina, went 8-for-12 with six RBIs and eight runs scored during the week with three walks and a pair of home runs. Mitchell opened with two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored in the win over Charleston Southern on Feb. 25. His best day at the plate came on Saturday against Saint Peter’s where the infielder recorded four base hits, three RBIs and three runs scored, with two of his hits being home runs. Mitchell capped off the week and the Bulldog’s sweep of Saint Peter’s on Sunday with two more hits, two runs and an RBI.

The weekly award is the first of Mitchell’s career.

The Bulldogs return to the diamond Tuesday afternoon as they travel to face USC Upstate, with first pitch set for 4 p.m.

Heinecke picked up his second win of the year in Saturday’s 8-0 victory over Merrimack. The sophomore from Fayetteville, Georgia, got the nod and pitched seven near-flawless innings to combine with fellow Wofford pitcher Jake Dippold for the shutout win. Heinecke allowed just two hits, with both coming in the sixth inning, while striking out 12 batters with no walks. The left-hander held opposing hitters to just a .083 batting average for the day.

The weekly award is the third of Heinecke’s career.

Wofford returns home on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. as the Terriers host Winthrop.
