Spartan seniors collect 100th win

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG’s men's basketball's senior class of Kyrin Galloway, Malik Massey and James Dickey collected the 100th win of their careers on Sunday, defeating visiting Samford by a 95-67 margin.

The Spartans started the night on a 12-3 run, hitting their first four shots on the evening. The home team would lead by 11 at the midway point of the half before a 15-2 UNCG run put the score at 38-19 in favor of the Spartans. UNCG continued to increase its advantage down the stretch, eventually taking a 49-30 lead into the break.

The Spartans combined for seven 3-pointers in the first half, with four of those coming from senior forward Kyrin Galloway. The Milton, Georgia, native had three blocks in the opening 20 minutes alone. Fifteen of the Spartans' 25 first-half rebounds came on the offensive boards, with Samford collecting a combined 13 rebounds on the offensive and defensive sides of the floor.

UNCG scored 19 of the first 27 points of the second half, taking as much as a 30-point lead before the 10-minute mark. The Spartans’ dominance on the glass continued to hinder the visiting Bulldogs, as the hosts tallied another nine offensive rebounds in the final 20 minutes, while outscoring Samford 46-37.

The Spartans outrebounded the Bulldogs 48-34, with half of UNCG's boards coming on the offensive glass.

James Dickey pulled down eight rebounds in the second half to give the senior a total of 16 on the evening. With 13 points, Dickey completed the 17th double-double of his career, while fellow senior Galloway recorded a team-high 19 points.

Robert Allen led Samford with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Donte Tatum tallied 11 points for  the Bulldogs and Jalen Dupree added 10.

UNCG moves to 19-6 on the season, tallying its ninth win of conference-play and its 12th win at home. The Spartans’ dozen home victories ties for the fourth-most ever recorded by a team in program history and sits four away from tying a school record. Samford falls to 8-18 overall and 2-10 in Southern Conference play.

UNCG's 95 points against Samford is the most it has scored against a Division I opponent this season and the most against a D1 side that wasn't The Citadel since scoring 98 against Samford in January 2018.

At the time of UNCG's final on Sunday, the Spartans were one of just 13 teams in Division I men's basketball to collect 100 wins since the 2016-17 campaign.

UNCG completes its three-game home stand against Western Carolina on Wednesday. The Spartans are 24-32 against the Catamounts all-time but will be looking for their ninth straight win against the side after defeating the Catamounts 72-58 earlier in the year.

Samford will host Furman on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. CT in the Pete Hanna Center.
