Samford takes three of four awards

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford’s Titus Moore and Matt Cahoon have been named the Southern Conference men’s indoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively, while Furman’s Gabbi Jennings and Samford’s Maggie Johnston claimed the honors on the women’s side, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included competition held Jan. 31 to Feb. 2.

Moore, a sophomore from Macon, Georgia, set a school record in the 60-meter hurdles at the South Alabama Jaguar Invitational on Sunday, turning in a time of 7.89 seconds to take second in the event. His time leads the SoCon this season by 0.11 seconds and ranks 38th on the NCAA Division I performance list. Moore also competed in the long jump at the meet, placing sixth.

Also competing at the Jaguar Invitational, Cahoon took fifth in the weight throw and seventh in the shot put. The junior from Cullman, Alabama, who was named the SoCon track athlete of the month for January on Tuesday, added to his conference lead in both throws, extending his SoCon-leading mark in the weight throw to more than a meter with an effort of 17.38 meters (57 feet, 3/4 inches) and recording a heave of 15.47 meters (50 feet, 9.1/4 inches) in the shot.

Furman’s Jennings set a program record at the Carolina Challenge on Friday, in Columbia, South Carolina, turning in a SoCon-leading time of 4:39.97 in the mile to supplant her own program mark and lower the facility record by more than 10 seconds. The Slidell, Louisiana, senior’s time is the best in the SoCon this season by more than seven seconds and is 17th on the NCAA performance list. She was named the SoCon track athlete of the month for January on Tuesday.

Johnston turned in a pair of fourth-place finishes and personal-best marks for the Bulldogs at the Jaguar Invitational on Sunday, breaking the school record in the weight throw. Johnston’s heave of 18.62 meters (61 feet, 1 1/4 inches) leads the SoCon by more than a meter, while her toss of 13.83 meters (45 feet, 4 1/2 inches) in the shot put is an indoor best for the senior from Macon, Georgia, and ranks second in the SoCon this season.
